Folk Harbour Festival Website
Client: Folk Harbour Festival
Every year, the Folk Harbour Festival floods Lunenburg with people. The skies are bright and everyone wanders around barefoot. Music plays in crowded tents, on harbour piers, and trickles from historic buildings. It's like Woodstock, except without the mud. When they asked me to overhaul their website, I jumped at the chance.
folkharbour.com pre-redesign
When I started on the project, the website was a bit of a mess. It suffered from major organizational problems, having numerous different people adding content at different times, into a system that failed to properly address their needs. Schedules were next to impossible to read, the design was lacklustre, and some pages went on for miles.

My first task was a total restructuring of the content. Working with a small committee, we decided how the content ought best to be organized. I built a custom database, along with a series of scripts to display the content in the frontend, and to modify it in the backend. The design was revamped, making use of more whitespace, better balance, brighter colours, and contextual icons. The schedules can now be viewed in a number of different ways, depending on the user's preference, and pages are kept to a minimum length. The Folk Harbour Society has found that, not only is their new website easier on the eyes than the old one, but it's also easier to update and to maintain, which means they can turn their attention to more important tasks at hand—like bringing more music to Lunenburg!
